The volcano eruption probably happened at one in the morning, according to Geophysics professor Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson. He said that there was an increased water flow coming from the glacier.
"Officials in two aeroplanes have seen smoke. The eruption is rather small at the moment," he said.
Icelandic television said that the evacuated were being placed in Red Cross centres.
The Fimmvorduhals volcano on the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, some 125 km east of the capital Reykjavik, erupted last month for the first time since 1823.
Gudmundsson said that the eruptions ended Tuesday.
