State to appeal sentence of 11-million-euro-robber
French state prosecutors are to appeal against a three-year prison term given to a van driver who stole over 11 million euros in cash last November. They believe that the sentence handed down to Toni Musulin in the central city of Lyon on Tuesday was too lenient, given that 2.5 million euros of the stolen money is still unaccounted for.
Issued on:
The former employee of Swedish security firm Loomis was also convicted of insurance fraud for reporting the theft of his Ferrari sports car in April 2009.
The maximum sentence Musulin could have received for being convicted of the two crimes was five years’ imprisonment, although he has already spent six months behind bars.
The 39-year-old surrendered to police in Monaco 11 days after abandoning the armoured van with which he escaped during the robbery.
The scale of the theft – and the fact that it was carried out without violence – saw Musulin hailed as a hero by French users of Facebook who set up a fan page in his honour.
