Greek Police have confirmed that they suspect a far-left extremist group is behind the shooting of the investigative journalist Socratis Guiolias on Monday.

According to Greek authorities Guioluias was killed by at least three people using a pair of nine-millimetre handguns which the Revolutionary Sect group had used to kill an anti-terrorist officer Nektarios Savas in June last year.

The Revolutionary Sect appeared in December 2008 after police fatally shot a teenage boy .

They also attached a police station and the headquarters of a private television channel in Athens in February 2009 and warned of further attacks on police and journalists.

Most of the shots in the killing of Guiolias were fired from the same that Savas last year, police said.

The second gun had been used in all three prior attacks.

The casings also match a single cartridge found on the grave of the police shooting victim, 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos, whose death led to violent protests across the country.

Attacks by extremist groups are relatively common in Greece, although journalists are rarely targeted.

Guiolias, whose wife is expeting their second child, was killed in front of his home in the middle class Athens suburb of Ilioupoli early Monday morning.
