The former supermodel did a version of Bowie's Absolute Beginners for the record which is being released to raise funds for the War Child charity, which provides emergency relief and long term rehabilitation to improve the living conditions and mental health of children affected by war.

Bowie's original version of the song reached number two in the UK singles chart in 1986 and was the theme tune for the film of the same name.

A clip of Bruni signing the song was leaked on YouTube where the Italian-born songstress can be heard signing in English. Reactions to her efforts have so far been mixed.

Whilst most YouTube users gave the thumbs up to the new arrangement, one user suggested Carla sticks to singing in French or Italian, saying her voice just does not work in English. Another called it a massacre of the original!

The First Lady quit the fashion world in 1997 to forge a music career. Having released a number of albums the 42-year-old performed to the world for the first time as the French First Lady at a Mandela Day 2009 concert, where she performed BobDylan’s 'Blowin’ in the Wind'.
