The two young men, a stonemason and a mechanic, were already known to the police, having been questioned, but not charged, over previous violent behaviour. One was brought to a police station by his mother after she heard that he was wanted.

A third man was detained on Wednesday but released.

Milroy, whose parents emigrated to Spain 26 years ago and run an American diner in Lloret de Mar, is reported to have been stabbed after he and five friends intervened in a fight between French tourists in the coastal resort on the night of 17-18 July.

There are frequent fights in the town’s streets when drunken tourists leave nightclubs.

Next week the accused men will appear before a Lyon court, which will decide whether to hand them over to the Spanish authorities.
