Following the decision of France's Constitutional Council to declare unconstitutional a law which punishes the denial of that genocide took place against Armenians in 1915, Turkey has said it is ready to share the pain of Armenians as they prepare to mark its 100th anniversary.

Armenians claim up to 1.5 million of their people were killed under the Ottoman Empire that ruled Turkey at the time.

Turkey however says 500,000 died, most of them due to fighting and starvation during World War I.

Although Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations, protocols were signed in 2009 to reestablish them and to form a joint commission to examine the past. But this process is still stalled. An international lawyer in Turkey's capital, Ankara, sets out a scenario for moving forward:
