Farming communities worry about disputed South Ossetia fences

Issued on:

In the disputed region of South Ossetia, the scene of bitter conflict between Russia and Georgia in 2008, kilometres of fencing are popping up overnight. Russian soldiers are building the partitions which, Moscow says, define the border of the de-facto independent state of South Ossetia. Russia and a handful of its allies recognise the sovereignty of the region, although Georgia considers it occupied land. For some of the farming communities living on the boundary, the fences pose an existential threat.
