The 17 year-old Roma "has emerged from his coma and his life is no longer in danger. He talks and recognises his family " said his lawyer Julie Launois-Flacelière.

On 13 June, Gheorghe, who doesn't speak French, was taken by force in front of his parents, locked in a basement and beaten by local residents who accused him of theft.

The teenager was later found dumped in a supermarket trolley and left for dead in the rough Parisian suburb of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine.

Suffering from severe brain injuries, he was taken to hospital and was put in an induced coma.

Gheorghe recently left Romania for France to join his parents, after escaping from a psychiatric hospital in Romania.

His family had just moved into an abandonned house in the north of Paris when the attack occured.

Police opened a criminal investigation in early July but no one has been detained.
