Illegal immigration: many migrants enter Europe via Turkey

The recent arrival on Italian shores of two crew-less ships filled with over a thousand mainly Syrian refugees has put the spotlight on Turkey and its role in people smuggling. At least one of ships, if not both, is believed to have used Turkey as a base for picking up its human cargo, the European Union has demanded action by Ankara.
