Destination Europe: Hungary part 1/5

Issued on:

Normally a source of mass emigration, the central European state of Hungary has become for the first time an epicentre of immigration. The United Nations recently estimated that there are currently 60 million refugees worldwide, a small portion of whom are currently making their way overland to western Europe fleeing conflicts in Africa and the Middle East. Hungary is a vital stop on the way and those that arrive have travelled thousands of kilometres through Turkey and the Balkans. In the first in our five part series Destination Europe, Andrew Connelly reports from Budapest to meet some making the journey.
