Kosovo series, part 4/5

Issued on:

The Kosovo war for independence from Yugoslavia between 1998 and 1999 left thousands dead, many were forced to flee their homes to other parts of Kosovo or to nearby states. Now - 26 years on from the end of the conflict - ethnic tensions between Kosovar Albanians and Kosovar Serbs still run high. The Northern city of Mitrovica is a focus of these tensions - and its famous bridge has been a staging point for violence between the communities in recent years. In the fourth report of RFI’s series on Kosovo, Thomas Lowe meets groups on both sides of the river trying to bring north and south back together.

The bridge in Mitrovica - between Kosovo and Serbia - remains blocked, despite a political accord to open it up again.
