Two years ago, the presidents of France, Russia and Ukraine along with German Chancellor Merkel agreed to a peace deal, known as the Minsk Agreement. The aim of the deal was to bring about a lasting solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
But, with fighting in its third winter, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the truce, continues to observe serious ceasefire violations in the region.
The ongoing deadlock has brought little peace to the area.
