Iraqis injured in al-Qaeda gun battle en route to France

France has sent a plane to Iraq to fetch 36 Iraqis who were wounded as Al-Qaeda gunmen held dozens of people hostage in Baghdad church last week.Forty-six people were killed as the gunmen took over the Our Lady of Salvation church, leading to an assault by Iraqi forces.

The plane carrying the 36 people with bullet and grenade wounds is due to arrive in Paris on Monday evening. They will then be taken to nearby hospitals.

France promised to help the most seriously wounded after the 31 October raid.

French Immigration Minster Eric Besson has said a second group of 93 people would be brought to France "in the coming weeks".

France has agreed to grant asylum to a total of 150 Iraqis, including those wounded in the attack and their families.
