French journalist's son suspected in his murder

The son and one of his friends, a 25-year-old man, could be charged for their alleged role in the death of Mazières, 60, a former Parisien newspaper journalist, whose body was found in his son’s bed at his Paris home on 24 December.

The son admitted to police that he bought a hammer with the intention of killing his father, according to the TFI television station.

An autopsy performed Saturday showed that Mazières died following a blow to the head with a blunt object and that he had been stabbed in the throat.

Mazières and his son did not have a good relationship, a source close to the investigation told the AFP news agency. The son allegedly took drugs and wanted more than the 500 euros a month provided to him by his father.

He allegedly asked a friend, who has already been involved with the police, to pressure Mazières for some money. He was detained Thursday evening,

A third man was brought in for questioning Friday, suspected of larceny, in connection with the murder. He is suspected of using Mazières’s credit card.
