The investigation started when a Haitian undocumented immigrant accused the man, known as Rémy S, of offering to help him obtain papers for 6,000 euros.

The case came to light when officials noticed that an officially stamped document, which the officer had sold to the immigrant for 2,000 euros, was a fake.

Rémy S denied any involvement but when his girlfriend was questioned she claimed he had twice asked her to go to the police station in Vitry-sur-Seine to collect property stolen from detainees.

They allegedly included two watches and 35,000 dollars (25,217 euros) stolen from a Chinese undocumented immigrant accused of breaking immigration law.

She later retracted her story and Rémy S accused her of having psychiatric problems and acting out of jealousy.

A counterfeit Rolex watch was later found hidden in a water-heater in Rémy S’s home and he was discovered to have paid 10,000 euros cash for a car and given his girlfriend a vehicle worth 2,000 euros.

Rémy S denies the charges, while admitting that he has had financial problems. He claims that his family helped him buy the cars.

“One thing is certain, he’s an odd guy,” a police source told the AFP news agency.
