Radio masts increase health problems, says new French study

A survey carried out in the south of France by a French environmental health organisation has found that people living close to radio masts are more likely to suffer health problems than those living elsewhere.

The study by Association Santé Environnement France, Asef, said 43 per cent of people close to radio masts complained of hearing problems including whistling and buzzing in the ears compared to just 15 per cent of the general population.

Other problems include trouble sleeping, which affected 55 per cent of those studied compared to 32 per cent of French people, and difficulties concentrating.

More worryingly, 83 per cent of those surveyed said their symptoms disappeared after they had been on holiday for a few days.

Asef’s secretary general, Dr Patrice Halimi, said the findings of the organisation’s study mirrored similar results from surveys carried out in Poland, Egypt and Austria.

“It’s clear we need to establish quality levels like those that exist already for air and water,” he said. “Lawmakers need to ask who benefits from not having these controls.”
