Champs Elysées shoppers welcome Christmas begging ban

Issued on:

As the Christmas period approaches, some 600,000 tourists are expected in Paris every day. Many will stroll down the Champs Elysées, which has been cleared of its beggars for the occasion. The French government introduced a six-month ban on begging on the Champs Elysées in September as part of a drive by Interior Minister Claude Guéant to tackle petty crime and in particular “Romanian delinquency” in Paris. Beggars can be fined up to 38 euros. Paris City Hall say it's nothing more than a publicity stunt, but visitors to the Champs Elysées seem rather pleased.
