Paris remembers Shakespeare and Company founder

Issued on:

George Whitman, who founded the English-language bookshop Shakespeare and Company in Paris in 1951, died on 14 December, at the age of 98. One of the most recognizable faces of Paris’s Anglophone literary community, Whitman had a vision that went beyond a simple bookshop. An estimated 50,000 writers and travellers passed through the establishment and many of them gathered there the evening of his funeral, to share stories about their charismatic friend.
