High winds in northern France leave thousands without electricity

Parts of northern France were without electricity on Thursday after high winds hit the Calais region overnight.

Around 6,500 homes were without power as more than 200 electricity workers tried to restore lines damaged by fallen trees and cables that were ripped out by the strong winds.

The Nord and Pas-de-Calais had been put on high alert Wednesday evening with winds expected to reach 110 kilometres per hour.

The strong winds were expected to move inland during the day.

On Tuesday, the region was placed on high alert for the first time after winds reached 125 kilomtres per hour in some places and 13,000 homes were left without electricity.
