Two attackers on a motorbike opened fire on the men at 11.40 pm Saturday night near Belleville metro station. One of the victims tried to seek refuge in the station and one

entrance was closed shortly after the incident.

The two men, one aged 25, the other 28, were seriously injured and doctors were struggling to save the life of one of them on Sunday morning.

Belleville is a socially and racially mixed area of Paris, described as “difficult” by police.

France has seen an increase in the use of machine-guns by criminals recently, reportedly linked to the rise of new drug-related gangs in some deprived areas.

Socialist Senator Samia Ghali last month proposed that the army be sent into certain neighbourhoods of the southern city of Marseille to tackle armed gangs.
