Paris police foil great Easter egg robbery

Three robbers were caught red-handed with a haul of 20 kilos of Easter eggs and 500 euros in cash by Paris police last weekend. The three, who appear to have a criminally inclined sweet tooth, claimed to be acting “out of necessity”.

Two men and a woman, all of Romanian origin, were caught robbing the bakery in Paris’s 17th arrondissement at 2.45 on Sunday morning.

The men, aged 40 and 33, were had transferred their booty to a car, as the woman, 37, kept watch armed with a mobile phone.

Police arrested them as they prepared to flee the scene of the crime.

As well as the money, police found 20 kilogrammes of sweets and chocolate eggs in the vehicle, as well as equipment to be used in breaking into premises.

The younger man had already been picked up in connection for at least 35 cases of breaking and entering in 2010.

Police believe that the trio were involved in a further 10 or so robberies of Paris bakeries.

They were charged on Tuesday.
