French lawyers protest over opening of special immigration courts

Issued on:

Two special immigration courts, both attached to detention centres near Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport, are due to open by the end of the year. With these new courtrooms, the government hopes to save money on transporting detainees to courthouses in neighbouring towns. But lawyers and rights groups say the courts will deprive immigrants of the right to a fair hearing. Justice Minister Christiane Taubira says the previous government made the decision to relocate the courtrooms, and she is only executing their decision. But activists say they hope to put enough pressure on her and the Interior Ministry to keep the courts from opening.
