Their injuries are not life-threatening and Bernard Reynès is expected to be discharged later today.

French President François Hollande condemned what he called “a deeply odious act”.

The aggressor was arrested and witnesses say that his behaviour when apprehended suggested that he might be mentally ill.

He is to undergo pyshiatric tests.

The incident happened as a cortège of about a hundred people was making its way to the war memorial at the entrance to the town cemetery.
