Paris is not the kind of capital city where historical buildings are torn down to make way for shiny new developments. But in the 1970s, the city council authorized the destruction of the central marketplace, Les Halles. Today, 40 years later, Parisians still bemoan the loss of the "Belly of Paris" as the old market place was known.
