France wants Unesco heritage status for D-Day beaches

At the approach of the 70th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, which turned the tides of the World War II, France’s government is lobbying for the beaches where allied troops landed to be classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Since Unesco doesn’t typically list battlefields, French officials are looking to present the beaches as a universal symbol for peace.
