Algerian soldiers in Bastille day WWI commemoration

Issued on:

Three Algerian soldiers will take part in today’s Bastille day ceremony, which is devoted to commemorating the start of the First World War, 100 years ago. Some on the French far right have protested against their presence. But the French government says Algerians, and others from France’s former colonies, should be recognised for their contribution to the war. Some 173,000 soldiers from Algeria - which at the time was a French department - fought in Europe during WWI.
