Air France employees fear Ebola

Air France employees want the airline to stop all flights to Ebola-affected countries in West Africa. The Air France Union SNGAF launched a petition asking for the "immediate end” to these flights.

Air France serves more West African destinations than any other major airline.

The carrier continues to operate daily flights to Conakry, the capital of Guinea. It also operates flights to Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, three times a week. Guinea and Sierra Leone are two of the countries most severely affected by the Ebola virus. It also offers daily flights to Lagos in Nigeria where Ebola deaths have also been reported.

In July Air France offered its staff the option to choose whether or not they want to fly to Conakry, Freetown and Lagos.

Flight crew members can also request to be withdrawn from a scheduled flight if they believe their health or life is in "grave and imminent danger". This team is then replaced by a reserve team.

But crew members want the flights to these countries to be cancelled altogether. The SNGAF petition asking for an immediate end to all flights to countries affected by the outbreak, received 700 signatures in three days.

British Airways and Emirates, along with other smaller airlines, have already suspended flights to the region.

Although Air France insists that their crew members have been trained in how to deal with Ebola on board, staff members say that this training is insufficient. Crew members received instructions on how to isolate a person who is suspected of being infected. The flights are also equipped with face masks and rubber gloves.
