Villagers protest against 1,000-cow dairy in northern France
For several months environmentalists and proponents of small-scale agriculture have been protesting against a dairy farm in the northern Picardie region. It has been dubbed the "1,000-cow farm", as it is built to house 1,000 dairy cows and a biogas plant to turn the animals' waste into energy. This is a big farm, as French dairies tend to have fewer than 100 cows. Despite the protests, the farm's developer moved in the first cows this weekend. The farm has turned residents of the neighboring village into activists.
