After being arrested on Friday, the man confessed to spotting his victims in supermarkets, noting their Pin codes at the checkout and following them home.

There he would pour a jar of tomato sauce on their doorsteps and ask for help to clear it up, in reality a ruse to enable him to steal the victim’s credit card.

The scheme earned him a total of 17,000 euros, he told police, but it had not worked on younger people.

A second suspect, aged 25, was arrested with him but released for lack of proof.
