The 31-year-old Degoulet, who was born in Le Mans but who is now based in Japan, beat a dozen rivals from the United States, Japan, Belgium, China, Israel and France.

The candidates were tested for their theoretical knowledge, taste pairing, cutting and cheese presentation.

For cheese preparation, they were provided with a specific budget which they had to use for shopping on the eve of the competition.

The second place went to another Frenchman Guillaume Cardinet while Belgian Nathalie Vanhaver took third place.

Besides the competition to determine the world's best cheesemonger, the three day event is also a platform for exchanging information about innovations and developments in the sector.

This year, the event attracted participants from 23 countries.
