Humanitarian crisis in Calais

Issued on:

As the migrant crisis continues in the northern port town of Calais, French charities have been called upon to hand out emergency food and medical aid. They're trying to stem a growing humanitarian crisis as some 3,000 migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East are living on 18 hecatres of wasteland while waiting to try and cross the Channel to the UK. It's the only place in Calais where migrants are tolerated, but living conditions are appalling. For the first time, French charities which usually operate abroad, have stepped in to avert a humanitarian crisis.
