More than seven tonnes of cannabis, hidden in three vans, were seized in the centre of the French capital Paris overnight. It is the biggest drugs seizure in France in ten years.

The three vans were parked on a boulevard in the chic 16th district of western Paris although noone was arrested.

According to a police source, the authorities had been investigating the load, which was in the form of resin blocks hidden in Moroccan suitcases, for weeks.

The street value of the seizure is estimated at 20 million euros, based on the price of 2,500-3,000 euros per kilo.

In 2014, around 200 tonnes of narcotics were seized by French customs officers, about 157 tonnes of which were cannabis.

This was a hike of 84% by comparison to the previous year, accoridng to official figures.

Cannabis is the most cnsumed drug in Europe and its consumption is on the increase, particularly in France where authorities estimate that demand is 300 tonnes per year.

Possesion or consumption of cannabis represents 60% of all drug-related offences in Europe.
