Number of unemployed in France dips in November

The French government received some encouraging news on Christmas Eve as the latest figures for the month of November show a dip in the number of people seeking jobs compared to October.

The respite came as the number of unemployed fell by 15,000 in November. This, after October witnessed a 42,000 increase in the number of those with no activity registering at employment centres.

The total number of those unemployed in metropolitan France still stands at 3.57 million, and despite the drop in November increased by 2.5 per cent.

It must be pointed out that registration trends at employment centres is a highly volatile indicator with strong monthly variations.

While October saw the largest increase of the unemployed since 2013, September conversely indicated a drop not seen since the end of 2007. That month there were 23,800 fewer unemployed people.

If one considers the trend over the past three months, there has been a stabilization with a small increase of 0.1 per cent.

However, the overall picture in France remains gloomy.

According to figures published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economics Studies, the average unemployment rate in metropolitan France in the third quarter of 2015 stands at 10.6 per cent of active population.

Over a year, that figure has risen by 0.2 per cent.
