Abdeslam, the sole survivor of the Paris attackers, was flown from Brussels to Paris under guard by members of France's elite GIGN anti-terror force, on Wednesday morning.

He was to appear in a Paris court to be charged during the course of the day.

Abdeslam, who was born in Brussels but holds French nationality, is believed to have rented to of the cars used in the attacks and claims to have backed out on a plan to take part in the bombing of the Stade de France football stadium.

He has chosed a high-profile lawyer, Frank Berton, to defend him in France.Berton has acted in several well-publicised cases, including defending Islamists involved in bombings in Paris in 1995.

He says he was contacted by Abdeslam's Belgian lawyer, Sven Mary, because "several colleagues found a certain similarity in the way we work".

"He wants to explain himself and, I think to collaborate with French justice," Berton told BFMTV after visiting Abdeslam in the Belgian jail where he was held in solitary confinement.
