French anti-terror police carried out a major operation near Paris on Thursday afternoon, following an anonymous tip-off of plans to launch violent action, sources said.

The raid took place in Argenteuil, north of Paris, police and judicial sources told the AFP news agency.

They targeted two addresses, reported to be near a mosque and an Islamic bookshop, and were carried out by elite DGSI units under the supervision of Paris anti-terrorist prosecutors.

No arms or explosives had been found at 4.00pm on Thursday.

The raids, sparked by an anonymous informant, come a week after the Bastille Day attack in Nice, which killed 84 people and injured about 300, and has sparked controversy over its handling.
