Terrorism victims to be better compensated - Hollande

The French president, François Hollande, has said that the government will reform the way victims of terrorism are compensated, which will result in an increase in what they receive.

He also said that resources made available to agencies fighting terrorism will also be augmented.

Speaking at a ceremony this morning at the military hospital and museum, Hotel des Invalides, Hollande said the country needs to take a new look at how the authorities are tackling terrorism.

We have to support and maintain anti-terrorism activities in particular the measures that have been put in place to prevent new attacks. It is an ongoing task and I will be looking at supplementary measure on top of what is already in place,” he said.

The annual ceremony, which was first held in 1989, allows families, those injured during attacks, and politicians to pay their respects to the France's victims of terror.

Numerous members of government and opposition leaders were present this year again, including former president Nicolas Sarkozy and the former prime minister, Alain Juppé, both of whom will be standing in the primaries for the conservative Les Republicans party.

Already with eight months to go before the presidential elections, the fight against terrorism is seen as one of the key election issues.

In the past 12 months 238 people have lost their lives in terrorist attacks including 86 killed in the Bastille Day attack in Nice, and 130 in a series of attacks in Paris on November 13th last year. There were also 12 killed in the attack on satirical magazine Charlie Hebod.
