The men's bodies were found by emergency services on Friday night in a black vehicle with no number plates.

One was 22 years old, the other 20.

While one of the victims was known to police as a drug user but the other had no criminal record.

A third man, aged 24, was also found in the car, lightly wounded.

He was taken into custody, the Marseille prosecutor's office said.

The men had been attacked by "two men on a scooter. One was armed with a Kalashnikov-style rifle, the other with a handgun," prosecutor Xavier Tarabeux said.

High crime rate

Marseille is known for its high crime rate and has a history of gangsterism.

The current spate of killings is believed to be linked to the drugs trade in the city's rundown estates.
