The attack, the deadliest to hit Iraq in a week, came as political wrangling over the outcome of Iraq's March 7 elections continued with no end in sight.
Khales, a city 65 kilometres northeast of Baghdad, was last struck with a major attack on March 26, when twin bombings at a cafe and restaurant killed 42 people and wounded 65 others.
