Muslim Brotherhood calls new Jordan demos for Friday

media A demonstration in Amman on 21 January 2011 Reuters

Jordan’s Islamist opposition on Wednesday called fresh protests for later in the week, pledging to press on with its campaign to force political and economic reform in the kingdom.

The Muslim Brotherhood says that it will hold rallies across the country after Friday’s Muslim prayers.

Following the uprising in Tunisia, thousands of Jordanians demonstrated in the capital Amman last Friday, while other demonstrations were held in the cities of Zarqa and Irbid.

Similar protests, also attracting thousands, were staged the previous week too.

They higlighted discontent over unemployment - officially 14 per cent - and the cost of living, which is the highest in the Arab world, according to several studies.
