Kadhafi and his aides face investigation into alleged war crimes

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi and his sons and key aides could face prosecution by the International Criminal Court over allegations they carried out crimes against humanity during the country's uprising. ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo announced on Thursday that the court had decided to open a probe into the alleged crimes and would investigate those responsible for the most serious incidents.

We have identified some individuals with de facto or formal authority, who had authority over the security forces who allegedly committed the crimes, " he said. "They are Moamer Kadhafi, his inner circle and some of his sons."

He added that he would ask ICC judges for arrest warrants within a few months.

Ocampo also warned a group of key Kadhafi aides to pay attention to crimes carried out by their people. "If they are not preventing, stopping or punishing these crimes, they will be responsible," he said.

These aides include the foreign minister, the head of the regime's personal security and the head of the Libyan External Security Organisation.

Thursday's announcement follows a referral by the United Nations Security Council which said at the weekend that the "widespread and systematic attacks currently taking place against the civilian population may amount to crimes against humanity".

It is believed more that 100,000 people have fled Libya to escape a crackdown by Kadhafi loyalists that has left at least 1,000 dead since 15 February.
