Israel, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority respond to air strikes on Gaza

The president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas and the leader of Gaza’s ruling party, Khaalid Mashaal of Hamas agreed on Sunday that the truce between their parties and Israel needs to be maintained in the Strip, in order not to give Israel a pretext to continue its air strikes.

Abbas and Mashaal are working closely with representatives from the European Union, the Quartet and the Egyptian authorities to present a united front in dealing with the Israeli attacks.

On Sunday, the Egyptian representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Yasser Othman stated that Egypt is exerting every possible effort to halt the strikes, calling Israel’s actions an unjustifiable breach to the truce that Egypt has supervised.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a cabinet meeting on Sunday that Israel has been successful in striking Gazan terrorists and will continue to operate as long as they feel it is necessary. The Israeli Air Force initiated the strike on Friday to target Zuhair Al-Qaisi, the leader of the Popular Resistance Committee, who they alleged was planning an attack along the Israeli-Egyptian border.

Othman responded to this allegation, saying that the area was under control, and that calling this a fight against terrorism was false attempt to justify the airstrikes.

Israel’s Iron Dome defence system, designed to intercept rockets targeted at densely populated areas, intercepted 15 rockets from Gaza on Sunday. So far there have been no deaths in Israel due to rocket fire.

On Sunday, the death toll in Gaza stood at 18, including a 12 -year-old boy. 25 people in the Gaza Strip have also been wounded by the attacks.

The airstrikes come as Gaza’s only power station closed for the third time on Saturday evening due to lack of fuel, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the Strip.
