Two armed men have entered a restaurant in Barcelona and are reported to be holding hostages, following an attack in which a van was driven into a crowd, causing a number of injuries. Two people are reported to have been killed. Police say they are "terrorist attacks".
The Palestinian Authority is again planning to submit a bid to become an observer member of the United Nations. However, the US and Israel are opposing the move. US President Barack Obama told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a telephone conversation on Sunday that his administration opposes the UN initiative. Israeli officials have threatened punitive measures if it goes ahead. But not everyone in Israel is against the bid.
