Amnesty calls for reform of Pakistan's tribal areas

Issued on:

Amnesty International says it has documented countless human rights violations in Pakistan’s tribal areas (Fatas) - both by security forces and armed groups such as the Taliban. The abuses include illegal killings and disappearances, torture and arbitrary detentions. The recently published report,The Hands of Cruelty, looks at a decade of violence. Amnesty calls on the Pakistani government to reform the legal system in the semi-autonomous areas on the border with Afghanistan. Failure to do so will fuel a human rights crisis., says Polly Truscott, an Amnesty spokeperson.
