Smuggling goods through tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt

Issued on:

Since Israel stepped up its blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2006 after Hamas came to power, residents have had to find new ways of importing many vital goods. The blockade restricts the importation of many items, including building materials, which Israel argues could be used to make weapons. Yet Gazans argue that supplies of food and medication are also restricted and they say they are often forced to buy goods at a higher price from Israel. RFI visited the underground tunnel system that connects the Gaza Strip to Egypt.
