The Assad family have ruled Syria and dominated politics there for decades. Before the current war there was hardly a street or a building without some link to a member of the Assad family. Everywhere there were portraits of Hafez, the Father of the clan. Son Bassel was groomed to be his successor until his death in a car accident nearly 20 years ago. Today Bashar and his London-born wife Asma continue the dynasty. The name means Lion in Arabic, though for many in Syria it is now eternally associated with one of the region’s bitterest civil wars.
