United Arab Emirates to pass law requiring mothers to breastfeed

The United Arab Emirates has added a breastfeeding mandate to its child welfare law. The country's federal council has approved a requirement that all children must be breast fed until the age of two. The clause will go into effect after it is signed by the president. Council members said mothers who are not able to breastfeed should use a wet nurse. The law would apply both to locals and to expatriates, who make up most of the Gulf country's population. RFI spoke to Tracy Kavanagh, a lactation consultant in the United Arab Emirates, who says the new law could cause problems for many mothers.
