More than 500 undocumented workers are applying for work permits at the Paris prefecture, after a 10-month stand-off between strikers and the government. On 18 June, the workers reached an agreement with the French immigration ministry. But recent declarations from President Nicolas Sarkozy linking immigration to a rise in crime in France have fuelled fears the application process will be stalled.
