Michael Schumacher deliberately went off piste before the accident that has landed him in a coma, investigators in the French Alpine town of Albertville told a special press conference on Wednesday after examining footage from a camera on his helmet.

Stressing that the Formula One champion was a very experienced skier, public prosecutor

Patrick Quincy said that two minutes of footage showed he had chosen to go off piste and that one of his skis hit a rock, causing his accident.

Schumacher was skiing "perfectly normally" for the type of terrain he was on, the investigation has found, and his skis were not faulty.

"You don't see him saving anyone," Quincy said, responding to claims that he had gone to the aid of a friend.

The inquiry has also found no faults in the marking of the pistes.
