Hamilton, who now has 41 career pole positions, also recorded his third straight pole of the 2015 season.

It was a tight contest between the reigning champion and his Mercedes Benz teammate Rosberg, who finished in second place, just 0.04 seconds slower. Sebastian Vettel, who is leading Ferrari’s resurgence this year, finished third.

The German driver was followed by Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas of Williams while Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Romain Grosjean of Lotus were next followed by Sauber duo Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson.

Hamilton, a three-time winner of the Chinese Grand Prix, had dominated the Friday practice sessions and was a clear favourite going to Saturday’s qualifying.

With this pole, Hamilton has now maintained a perfect qualifying record for this season.

Sunday’s race is expected to be yet another showdown between Hamilton and Rosberg. Despite their dominance, Mercedes Benz would be wary of Vettel, who sprung a surprise by winning the Malaysian Grand Prix two weeks ago.

It was yet another forgetful day for the McLaren team as former world champions Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso languished in 17th and 18th places respectively.
