Kosovo's national football team is this week poised to win permission to start playing in continental European competitions, which will bring the country, which declared independence in 2008, a step closer to its dream of competing in the 2018 World Cup.

Uefa's executive committee will open a two-day session on Thursday in Malta, where it can rule Kosovo eligible to apply for European cups.

The team needs to play in such competitions before it can gain Fifa membership.

Speaking in the Maltese coastal town of St Julian's on Tuesday, Kosovo Football Federation secretary general Eroll Salihu said told the Associated Press that Kosovo "is expecting to become full members of Uefa and [then] Fifa" and "to catch the (World Cup) qualification".

Kosovo's football ambitions are part of its push for international recognition, since it declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
